Our undergraduate programs provide a thorough foundation in the principles and practices of computing, paving the way for a successful career and/or graduate studies.

Computer science students explore a broad spectrum of computing technologies and concepts.  

 

WHY COMPUTING SCIENCES?

Students have an opportunity to pursue application development and reserach either indpendently or in collaboration with faculty.  Areas include social computing, machine learning, native language processing, network science, cyber security and software engineering. 

Our Vatican Internship Program, established in 2003, places students within various offices in and around the Vatican to work on application development, compatibility modifications, network modeling, virtual reality projects and more.

For more than 20 years, our department has maintained relationships with several Philadelphia junior high and high schools, providing them refurbished computers and education about computational thinking, coding and computer programming.

RESEARCH CENTER

The interdisciplinary Center for Excellence in Enterprise Technology is dedicated to distinction in the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge and solutions to contemporary software challenges. Home to the University鈥檚 CAVE鈥攁n immersive, virtual reality facility鈥攖he Center promotes interactive learning across the University and through external academic and industry partnerships.

WHO WE ARE

PURSUING A PASSION FOR DATA SCIENCE

Ike Osuagwu 鈥�20 CLAS hopes to pursue a career in data science. He told his advisor鈥擣rank Klassner, PhD, of Computing Sciences鈥攖hat he wanted to add a Chemistry minor to his Computer Science major, and Dr. Klassner drew up an academic plan for him, including contact names and areas of Computer Science that would help the most on Ike's career path. That support helped Ike concurrently take courses in software engineering and organic chemistry while a student-athlete on 棉花糖直播鈥檚 track and field and football teams鈥攁nd fitting in a summer data science internship with a Philadelphia firm.

ENDLESS PROFESSIONAL POSSIBILITIES

鈥淚 naturally gravitated towards Computer Science because of the way a person can use logical and critical thinking, as well as creativity, to solve problems,鈥� says Cassidy King 鈥�23 CLAS. 鈥淐omputer Science provides endless opportunities in business and in a wide variety of professional industries. Because of this, I dove into it and into learning everything I could about it.鈥� In the summer after her freshman year, Cassidy landed an internship with The MITRE Corporation, a large nonprofit that handles federally funded research projects and contracts.

LANGUAGE AND TECH

Ander Swartz 鈥�23 CLAS, a Computer Science major, is fascinated by natural language processing. Ander is a member of the Word Recognition and Auditory Perception Lab at 棉花糖直播, which studies how human listeners recognize speech and understand spoken language. He is developing computational models of speech perception and spoken word recognition. 鈥淢y research is meaningful to me because it showcases how complex natural language is, and how computers can help us better understand each other.鈥�
