LATIN AMERICAN STUDIES

The Latin American Studies Program strongly encourages study abroad for all students. Latin America offers invaluable experience in language, culture, and contemporary life issues, students in the program are strongly encouraged to spend a summer or semester in the region. By studying abroad, they will learn how to navigate different cultures, meet with people from diverse backgrounds, and communicate in other languages.

Please refer to the GIS MAP for information related to Academic Planning and Timing of your study abroad experience. 

Major: Global Intedisciplinary Studies offers students the opportunity to major in Latin American Studies . The GIS: Latin American Studies major requires that students study abroad for one semester or on two summer programs. Majors are encouraged to consider programs in Latin America.

Majors should review  the GIS MAP for additional GIS major information on "Academic Planning" and "Timing" for their study abroad experience.

Minor: Students can also pursue a Latin American Studies minor. Please contact the Director of the Latin American Studies program to discuss the curriculum and how to fit an Latin American Studies minor into your ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ curriculum.

The Latin American Studies program encourages students to consider programs that provide practical experiences. Language immersion, internships and independent research wonderful ways to gain hands-on, professional experience.

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ or program application deadlines.

There are many scholarships available for students through ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
