Honors
Studying abroad is an invaluable experience that helps students become truly globally minded, and Honors students across all four colleges are encouraged to find a study abroad program that works for their academic goals.
An extension of the ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ education, students studying internationally learn in a new environment, study topics from a different perspective and are challenged by new ideas in their academic pursuits. It's an opportunity to take a class not offered at ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥, to explore a new area of interest, or to examine a discipline from a different point of view.
Honors students may receive up to six credits that count towards their Honors degree through these programs. There are also scholarships available exclusively to Honors students studying abroad.
Students pursuing the Honors degree may receive up to six Honors credits from eligible study abroad courses. Contact information and Handshake links for the Honors Program’s Assistant Director, who oversees all Honors academic advising, can be found on the .

While students from any college or major may study abroad, studying abroad is built into the course sequence for students in the Honors Philosophy, Politics, and Economics cohort. PPE students have the opportunity to study with the at the University of Cambridge, which they typically do during Spring of sophomore year. Learn more about the PPE cohort and studying at Cambridge.
Search the OEA Course Approval History database to select from more than 3,000 study abroad courses that have already been pre-approved for liberal education requirements and a growing list of technical courses.
The Course Approval History database is not all-inclusive and students can work with an OEA advisor to submit additional courses for review.
Summer study abroad is possible after the student’s first year through end of junior year. Semester study abroad is possible beginning fall semester of sophomore year through fall semester of senior year, depending on sequencing of major curriculum.
- Exception made for the VSB 1st year, spring semester Global Citizens Program.
- Students in the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics cohort participating in the INSTEP Cambridge program typically study abroad during Spring of their sophomore year.
- Senior year study abroad must be approved by the College.
Depending on their college, students pursuing an Honors credential may be required to take a course that must be taken during a particular semester. Please consult the on the Honors SharePoint site and reach out to the Assistant Director if you are concerned that studying abroad will interfere with your ability to fulfill an Honors degree requirement.
Helpful Tips
Before Going Abroad
Students should begin the study abroad advising process as early as possible. In addition to , review the eligibility criteria and policies outlined on the SharePoint study abroad form if you plan to request Honors credit for your study abroad course. Only courses that meet these criteria may count towards Honors degrees.
Notify the Honors Assistant Director that you are planning to study abroad. You are encouraged to meet with the Assistant Director to discuss your program and how it fits into your plans for the Honors degree. Contact information and Handshake links can be found on .
While abroad
If you are finding that a course you expected to be Honors-level and eligible Honors credit is not going how you anticipated, reach out to the Assistant Director while abroad to discuss the possibility of contracting that course for Honors credit.
After returning
Those interested in receiving Honors credits for their study abroad experience are required to submit the Study Abroad form on the within 3 months after returning to campus. Students planning to study abroad should review the form before choosing the program to learn more about which study abroad courses are eligible.
As part of the core tenant of learning, the Honors program encourages students to consider programs that provide critical thinking and practical experiences.
Study abroad opportunities are not limited to formal instruction. Consider taking advantage of the unique research, internship, and fieldwork opportunities available in different regions of the world.
Broadly recommended for Honors students:
Study theology, philosophy, English literature and British history for one year in Blackfriars Hall at Oxford University *Deadline is generally late-February for the upcoming academic year.

It is important to plan ahead as it is not uncommon for scholarship deadlines to occur much earlier than a ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ or program application deadlines.
There are many scholarships available for students through ÃÞ»¨ÌÇÖ±²¥ University, our partner programs and other external sources, like the US Government. The OEA can help students with the scholarship search and application process. If a scholarship is found outside of the OEA scholarship page, students should have it reviewed by the OEA to determine if it is a viable option.
